Eclipse for Mac: A Step-by-Step Guide for Installation on M1 Chip MacBook Air

When it comes to installing Eclipse on a Mac, many users face challenges, especially with the latest M1 chip-based MacBook Air. In this article, we will provide a step-by-step guide on how to install Eclipse for Mac and overcome common issues that arise during the process.

Firstly, let's clarify that SAP GUI for Java 7.5 and 7.7 no longer require OpenJFX installation as it is now embedded in the installation files. However, users need to set the module path of JFX at the Installation Option step. In earlier versions of SAP GUI for Java, users had to install OpenJFX separately to support the user interface.

When installing Eclipse on an M1 chip-based MacBook Air, you may notice that the Homebrew installed version is for X64 instead of AArch64. To overcome this issue, you can use Homebrew to install SAPMachine as well. Once you have installed SAPMachine, you need to check the Java version and add the necessary configurations to the zshrc file.

To do so, open the ~/.zshrc file and append the following information:

export JAVA_HOME=/opt/jdk/sapmachine-jdk-17.jdk/Contents/Home

export PATH='/opt/jdk/sapmachine-jdk-17.jdk/Contents/Home/bin:$PATH'

After making these changes, you can find that the arm64 version of Open JDK 17 has been installed. You can then download SAPMachine from the official website and choose the MacOS aarch64 version.

Once downloaded, you can open the file and copy the content to a local folder, such as /opt/jdk. The structure should resemble the following:

For testing purposes, it is recommended to install the latest version of Open JDK using Homebrew:

$ brew install openjdk

After installation, check your Java version and home by running the command:

$ /usr/libexec/java_home -V

You can choose one of the JDK versions available and proceed with the installation. The simplest way is to use OpenJDK.

In our testing, we have installed both Standard JDK and OpenJDK on an M1 chip-based MacBook Air, and both are working seamlessly for installing SAP GUI and Eclipse. However, it's worth noting that Standard JDK doesn't support M1 chips yet.

By following these steps, you should be able to successfully install Eclipse on your Mac, including the latest M1 chip-based MacBook Air.
